To hold  any extra material away from getting stitched inside your hoop, purchase some large hair clamps at any discount store.  Works great!

Purchase the shelf/drawer liner at any discount store, cut to the size of your sewing machine, and place underneath.  This keeps it from moving around, if on a slick surface.  I also use the shelf liner underneath my simple hooper and serger.
